STATE POLICE CONTINUE TO INVESTIGATE FATAL AUTO ACCIDENT ON ROUTE 8 IN NAUGATUCK

The final report concerning the investigation into a fatal car crash on Route 8 will not be ready for weeks the Connecticut State Police stated.

A CT State Police accident investigation team is looking into why a New Haven man, Edmundo Mendieta, drove the wrong way on CT State Highway Route 8 in the southbound lane before crashing head-on with 24-year-old William Baer Jr. on Saturday evening.

Tragically, Mr. Baer died from his injuries at Waterbury Hospital. A passenger in his vehicle, 22-year-old Stratford resident Sara Chmielewski, remains in critical condition at Saint Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury.

“It was a serious accident, and there are a lot of factors that need to be examined,” said Lt. J. Paul Vance, spokesman for the state police. Lt. Vance declined to comment on specifics of the accident, although he said the potential contributing factors – including alcohol, speeding or drugs – will be looked into during the course of the police probe.

Anyone with information related to the accident should contact the Troop I state police barracks in Bethany at 203-393-4200.
